Dr. Anbec M. DeShield is the Coordinator for a new student health program, Students Committed to Retaining Unlimited Bedside Skills in Health Care Program (SCRUBS). This program targets high school students at Northeast Guilford High School located in McLeansville, NC with an interest in healthcare careers. S.C.R.U.B.S promotes awareness in health careers with a focus on seven health occupations that are projected by the U.S. Department of Labor and Industry to soon be in high demand. Currently, they have 25 students enrolled in the program!
Additionally, Dr. Anbec M. DeShield, Owner of Best Smile Dental was elected President of the North Carolina Dental Society 3rd District on Friday, November 16, 2018 at the annual 3rd and 4th district combined district meeting. Dr. DeShield took office effective January 1, 2019. Dr. DeShield will be responsible for dentist offices in 14 counties. Those counties include Alamance, Anson, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Guilford, Montgomery, Moore, Orange, Person, Randolph, Richmond, Rockingham and Stanly. Dr. DeShield stated that her goal as President is to “increase membership, support dental students, and aid members with the utilization of resources provided by the NCDS and ADA.” Dr. DeShield went on to say “it is an honor to serve in organized dentistry for our state.”
Dr. DeShield was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina and is excited about the opportunity to serve her community as President. Dr. DeShield strongly believes in education and in 2005 graduated from the University of= North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a double major in Chemistry and African= Studies. In 2009, she graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry (UNC-SOD) and worked in both private and public health dentistry. Dr. DeShield also has a Masters of Public Administration with a concentration in Health Care from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Dr. DeShield started her career with FirstHealth Dental Care Centers, which is a nonprofit dental center located in Southern Pines, Troy, and Raeford that serves the underserved youth of North Carolina. She is an adjunct faculty of UNC-SOD and enjoys mentoring students and new graduates from both UNC-SOD and East Carolina School of Dental Medicine. She has been an active m= ember of the Grand Magnolias of NC, American Dental Association, National Dental Association, North Carolina Dental Society (NCDS), and Old North Stat= e Dental Society since she graduated dental school and believes in the power of organized dentistry.
Dr. DeShield’s family is from Liberia, West Africa and she hopes to help restore the health care infrastructure of her parent’s native land. Aside from dentistry, Dr. DeShield loves to travel, watch movies, and spend quality time with her family and friends!
