“It’s part art, it’s part science.”

Calder Preyer, 31, beer artist

It was one of those moments of pure inspiration.

“I thought to myself, ‘I love drinking beer. I should make it,’” Calder Preyer says.

Calder, 31, is the brew master of Preyer Brewing, a downtown Greensboro craft brewery that he owns with his brothers, wife and parents. He comes from a long line of Greensboro residents, including the creator of Vick’s VapoRub.

The brewery is less than a year old, but brews like their Strawberry Wheat Ale – made with local Faucette Farms berries – have already earned them converts.

Brewing is a delicate business. It’s about finding the perfect balance between chemistry, biology, recipe formulation and technique.

“It’s part art, it’s part science,” Calder says.

It’s a gig that can take up to 16 hours a day, but Calder says it’s satisfying seeing customers drinking beer as he’s finishing up his day. Plus, he owns the place, so he can always bring his kid to work.
